I happened to get Ciaran Carson's translation of Dante's Inferno right after we finished discussing For All We Know, and I could not resist reading it right away. It is an exhilarating book, but what I want to refer you to here is this, from Carson's introduction:
Natives of Belfast claim that they can tell each other's identities—Protestant or Catholic—by a combination of accent, vocabulary, clothes, bearing, and gesture.
This confirms our reading of Gabriel's comments to Nina in the second "Birthright" poem in For All We Know.
